How to write your brand message

In order to create a compelling offer and the connect with your tribe writing a strong brand message is crucial. It involves a combination of understanding your target audience, identifying your unique value proposition, and crafting a clear story that resonates with your tribe.

A consistent brand message across all channels can help build trust and credibility with your tribe. A well-crafted brand strategy ensures that all messaging, visuals, and experiences align with a company’s core values and mission.

For example, my brand message At Studio Folklore is:

Strategise your story, straightforward strategy and chic website design for creative folk.

Which implies that we take a holistic and birds-eye-view approach in every project. Whether this is for a furniture maker, an antique jewellery dealer or a technology company. We zoom out to see what the audience will see overall and then gradually zoom in to generate each necessary component with care and attention to detail. My process is steeped in my brand and vice versa.

I believe that your brand is more than just a logo or website. It’s the heart and soul of your business, the embodiment of your values, and the promise you make to your tribe. That’s why I am passionate about helping businesses like yours create strong, memorable brands that resonate with your tribe and drive long-term success.

Grab your notepad again and jot down some ideas for yours. Here is a step by step guide for you.

  1. Identify your target audience: So that your brand message resonates you need to understand who your target audience is. Consider factors like demographics, their interests, location, salary, pain points, and motivations. Speak to their needs and desires, don't just list product features.
  2. What is your unique value proposition: This differentiates you from competitors. In the words of Jack Trout 'differentiate or die'. Your UVP is the reason tribes should choose your product or service over others and more importantly keep coming back for more. To determine your MVP identify the benefits and advantages that your product or service provides. How do they solve your tribe' problems or address their needs and desires?
  3. Crafting your brand message: Once you have a clear understanding of your target audience and UVP, it’s time to craft your brand message. Your message should be clear, concise, and compelling. It should communicate your unique value proposition in a way that resonates with your target audience. Your message should also reflect your brand’s personality and tone; whether it’s playful, professional, or authoritative.
  4. Test and refine your message: Once you have crafted your message, it’s essential to test it with your target audience to see how it resonates. You can conduct surveys or focus groups to get feedback and refine your message based on the results. Believe me I have done this more than once or twice. This is because as you get more involved in what your company does you will realise the reality of who your tribe actually is made up of. You then need to have the confidence to test and then iterate.
  5. Consistency is key: To ensure that your brand message resonates with your tribe, it’s essential to be consistent in your messaging across all channels, including your website, social media, advertising, and customer service. This consistency helps to reinforce your brand’s values, personality, and messaging.

Writing a strong brand message requires a deep understanding of your target audience, a clear and compelling unique value proposition, and a message that resonates with your tribe. With these steps in mind, you can create a brand message that sets you apart from your competitors and connects with your tribe.
