SEO, optimise your website and be found organically.

SEO, the myth the legend. Why am I not ranking for what I offer? I hear this super common question when people come to Folk Lore for a boost. Here's the low down and how-to. Google’s algorithm is constantly scanning content to serve it up to search queries in whatever way it believes is most likely to leave the searcher satisfied.

1. Client centric keyword research:

What will your customers type when they search for your services? ie. What do you want to be found for? What are their key search terms? Local photographer, photographing businesses, manufacturers, commercial photography, photographer for brands, brand photographer…When writing copy slip in your keywords in a natural way. Keyword stuffing works against you.

Your goal here is to tap into the minds of your prospective clients: uncover the questions they’re asking, learn the language they’re using, and use that information to guide what content you create. Get started and answer these questions.:

  • How do they describe their problems?
  • What words are they using to find or recommend your services?
  • How does your current copy differ from the messages you’re putting out into the world on Insta, LinkedIn etc.? Across all your marketing efforts…
  • Not sure how to tap into this ‘insider information’? Here are a few ideas to get you started:
  • Take a look at your inbox—look for the questions people typically ask about your company or services.
  • Join forums and online communities—pay attention to popular topics and discussions.
  • Read review sites—learn how your target market talks about similar products or services.
  • Talk to your prospects and clients—jot down words and phrases that strike you as significant.

A fantastic tool is to try out is Google's keyword Planner: https://ads.google.com/home/tools/keyword-planner/. It is a free tool that allows you to research what you could rank for. If you struggle to find the sweet spot between ‘highly searchable term’ and what you can actually rank for against the competition try to narrow your focus to a specific region or city eg. photographer cotswolds or photographer stroud

  • Make a list of the must-have keywords on your website pages
  • Avoid using the same primary keyword on every page

2. Headline tags:

Using the correct H1,H2,H3,H4,H5,H6 tags within headers and subheaders means Google (and other search engines) can read and understand your website logically.

  • eg. H1 tag = About Studio Folk Lore
  • H2 tag = delivering strategy and chic website design to the world's greatest creatives
  • H3 tag = Alice Straker Art and Homewares
  • H2 tag = Are you ready for me to help transform your business? If so, get in touch. I'd love to hear more about your vision and goals.
  • H2 tag = This is how we can help you achieve transformation and walk away feeling confident and fired up about your business.
  • H4 tag = Our Services

3. Meta descriptions:

Make your Meta descriptions mega clickable.

  • 155 characters MAX
  • Write in an active voice
  • Include a call to action
  • Include your primary keyword
  • Don’t use the same meta description more than once
  • Make sure the meta description closely mirrors what is on your page

4. Optimise your images:

  • Name all image files eg. object-story-photoshoot-stroud-carmel-king-photography
  • Name add the alt tags to your images eg. object-story-kitchenware-stroud-carmel-king-photography
  • Use https://tinyjpg.com/ to compress your images. Ignore the cheesy panda…it is honestly an industry go-to image compression website.

5. Are you registered in:

  • Local groups
  • Reddit, Facebook groups, Next Door etc. you don’t need to be 100% active, the backlink works wonders and you will be notified if someone wants to get in touch with you.
  • Check out community memberships or local directories, ensure your website link is included in the correct field. If you can, include some links in any text boxes.

6. Backlinks

  • N.B don’t request links for links, you could be penalised for this. Keep it organic and natural.
  • Ask your clients to hook you up and credit you. Say hey, I’d love to be featured / credited on your website. Here’s the link to my website + my logo file. Thank you very much!
  • Testimonials. Have you collaborated with someone recently? Ask for a testimonial. You'll be overjoyed with the accolades!
  • If you run a shop, be a gem and feature your brands. Here’s the link to my website + my logo file. Thank you very much!
  • If you have stockists, ask them to feature you. Here’s the link to my website + my logo file. Thank you very much!
  • Interviews, ask to be featured on blogs, news articles etc. eg. Hi, love your podcast / blog / zine. If you are looking for brands / businesses etc. to feature I’d love to put myself forward. Here’s what I do and here’s why I think we are a good fit. Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks so much for your time. Georgina
